Several years ago, I met JoAnn Meaker, a transplant to central Virginia from upstate New York. She was one of the few people I’ve ever met outside the National Park Service or the Veterans Administration who had a sustained interest in researching Richmond National Cemetery. Part of her interest arose from a family connection to a burial there.
All those years of research has finally paid off, for she has just released her book, Stories Beneath the Stones: Richmond National Cemetery. It is a 334(!) page book featuring biographies and research on many of the Civil War-era soldiers buried at Richmond National. Today, on Memorial Day 2017, she will be speaking at the cemetery and giving a tour at 10:00am to talk about her study. It is great to see this important site host such an event, and I look forward to reading her book.
